Abstract: The vagus nerve is the longest nerve of the organism ans is constituted by 80% afferent and 20% efferent fibers. It is the major component of the parasympathetic nervous system and is also a key actor of the neuro-immune and brain-gut axes through a bi-directional communication between the brain and the gastrointestinal tract. Parasympathetic and sympathetic systems constitute the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) which is responsible for the maintenance of the body homeostasis. An imbalance of the ANS is often observed in various pathologic conditions. In inflammatory conditions, both sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems act in synergy to inhibit the release of Tumor Necrosis factor (TNFalpha) by macrophages. Because of its anti-inflammatory action, the vagus nerve is a therapeutic target in the treatment of chronic inflammatory disorders.
